Unconfirmed utility positions are a leading cause of construction delays, safety incidents, and unplanned costs. 4Sight's designating service is built to change that.
Designating is more than pointing a locator at the ground. It starts with records research to understand what is expected on site, moves through signal application and field verification to confirm what is actually there, and concludes with accurate surface marking and documentation. Every step is carried out using a disciplined, structured approach, so the data you receive is something you can genuinely rely on.
A key method behind our designating work is electromagnetic induction (EMI). By applying an alternating current to a buried conductor, a magnetic field is generated that can be detected from the surface. Unlike electricity, magnetic fields are not affected by insulation, pipe materials, or soil conditions, making the signal consistent and reliable regardless of what surrounds the utility. Understanding how that signal behaves, and how field conditions can influence results, is central to how our technicians are trained and why the quality of our data stands up.
Accurate utility locating depends on more than good equipment. It depends on the people operating it. Our team brings the training, experience, and discipline to collect data that project teams can actually rely on.
What Sets 4Sight Apart
1. Training and Expertise
Our technicians complete structured internal training that builds a deep understanding of signal behaviour, field conditions, and quality verification, ensuring consistent performance across every project.
2. Trusted Across Complex, Multi-Stakeholder Environments
We work regularly alongside government agencies, municipalities, transit authorities, engineering consultants, and utility owners. Our team knows how to operate within these environments, maintain relationships, and keep projects moving forward.
3. Integrated SUE Approach
Our findings are not delivered in isolation, we integrate subsurface data into the broader SUE process, coordinating closely with survey teams, designers, and project stakeholders to minimize risk and eliminate knowledge gaps.
4. Deep-Rooted Experience
4Sight is led by professionals with deep roots in Subsurface Utility Engineering. That experience shapes how we approach complex sites, how we interpret anomalies, and how we communicate findings clearly to engineers, contractors, and owners.
5. Strong Partnership
We measure our success by yours. That means proactive issue flagging, fast turnaround where it matters, and consistent deliverables that support your schedule, your design process, and your stakeholders from start to finish.
